Zodiac Sign Artwork Series - Cancer (June 22- July 23)

Steady working on this Zodiac Sign art series. Was able to complete Cancer, the cab- mixed media collage this week. Hopefully I will beable to work a little on Leo, the loin zodiac sign this weekend.

I have been surrounded by many cancers throughout my life. My dad born July 5th, grandmom born July 5th, mom born July 7th and my boyfriend July 8th.

For me:

Cancers have  provided me with totally affection and love. The emotional and financial security they have offered me comes natural for them. They are family oriented and are full of strength and character when I've needed it the most.   

The Cancers in my life have their place, and they  fit every need I've desired. I'm happy to be part of a family of so many Cancer zodiac signs.

illustration Friday: Slither

I haven't been activate in posting to Illustration Friday challenge, but I thought what time would be a good time- this time would be a great one for me.

The word from Illustration Friday is Slither- to slip or slide on or as on a slope with a loose or broken surface- to move along by sliding or gliding, as a snake- to walk with a sliding motion.

Well in my interpretation I didn't want to illustrate the word -slither so literally. I thought since I work with vintage images in my collages - and the purpose of my collages are to tell a visual story- My story for this artwork would be:

"Slither is what they call me, but it isn't cuz I have the minds of a snake, but cuz I've learned to slip n slide thru- this world calls life. My upbringings haven't been that easy and the "Man" has caused alot of my hardship. But I'm not down 'bout it, I've jest learned to slip in wenz I can and slide out wenz it's time to move on. Slither is what they call me."

Screen Printing without Screens or Emulsion - Demo Video

As mention in my last post- I was busy this past weekend. Got lots done.  I finally figured out how to record myself working on a collage. I was actually able to created a demo video of me working on a small collage. I am so proud of myself. YEAHHHH!

 

Working on Phenomenal Woman Card Series

On my to-do list from this weekend was to work on a few collages for card and print series. Well Instead on 1 to 2- I was able to create 5. Take a look at what I was able to complete.

Tell me what you think of them. Also looking for a good place to get them printed. I really want them printed on recycled paper. Do you have any suggestions?

 
By the way Card 2 is going to be used for Mother Day Cards.

Licensing Artwork to use on T-shirts and Scraves

This past Saturday (March 22nd) at the Flow by Tara Davis Trunk Show my artwork was again featured on the runway. For the past 2 years I've worked with a friend & fashion designer -

 Tara Davis with agreeing to license my mixed media collage artwork as a print design

and screen print for the Flowistic line.

We first introduced one print design at Charlotte Fashion Week  Fall 2008  and then again the same design at her Spring 2009 Trunk Show .   For Spring 2010 we decided to do a few things different. We decided to use one mixed media collage as a fabric print for a scarf and one image as a screen print.

The model in this picture is wearing the scarf, draped around her shoulders. We were able to print design on fabric, with an online fabric printing company called Spoonflower.

I was really expressed with the printing from Spoonflower. Great quality work!

This model is wearing the same scarf, but it's tied in a ascost style.

Yes its the Jewels images but in a different color.

Retirement Celebration Mixed Media Collage

I decided to plan a surprise retirement celebration for my mom. And alone with calling her friends, deciding on a place I had to also design a mixed media collage for the cover of the invitations.

Please Note: Those of you who know my mom- please don't tell her about the surprise. Her dinner is March 20th.

Below is the original design.

Mixed Media Collage in a black and white halftone. Halftone was created in Photoshop. I saved the image as a jpeg and decided to add text using another program.

 

 The other program I used was MS Powerpoint. Yeah  Powerpoint! I know I should use some  fancy graphic software. But MS Powerpoint is quick and I am able to save the file as a JPEG (low resolution of 125). I really didn't have much time to get this together. So I went to what I know best and that is powerpoint. I have used powerpoint to design banners for my blogs and websites (Will share I how to create a banner in powerpoint in a few days).

So below is the Mixed Media Collage with text. The text and and colored box was created in powerpoint and then saved as a JPEG.

Ok, this Mixed Media Collage Halftone photo with a greenish overlay and text was also created in powerpoint. All I did was use the recolor setting to change the black and white halftone photo. The box color was changed with shape fill setting.

 A tutorial on how I created these collages is coming very soon. I just wanted to share what I've been doing in my studio. By the way-  2nd image was used for the initiations

These mixed media collages were created on alphabet cards. The size was small and required a little of a changellage for me to create texture, movement and good compostion within this small area. I mailed these cards to Somerset Studio magazine's Alice in Wonderland art call.

An Interview about My Creative Process

This interview was created by The Art Institute of Charlotte's Video Production Department. Charles Easley, Multi-media and Video Department Chair  actually conducted the interview. This was a really fun interview. It allowed me to talk about my creative process and to overcome my shyness of the camera. 

I'm sorta amazed  that I did stumble alot on my words. I guess if you are talking about the things you love, it comes easy.
