I am pretty sure that some of you know that I am working on my doctorate in education at Argosy University. I am almost down to my last research courses, then I go on to comps, then when I pass those, I move on to the dissertation phase, YEAH!!! But as I go thru- my last couple of research courses, I wanted to share what I have learned and apply my new knowledge to my art and teaching life.
I am currently taking an Action Research course that requires that I keep a reflective/research journal. This is an easy assignment for me since I keep a blog, but I wanted to share my experiences with you guys and share with you how to apply my research findings to your everyday critical thinking lives. As I was working on a paper for this course I ran across an article on How to Keep a Research Diary by Ian Hughes. I though how interesting and how can I apply these same principles to how to create an artist blog. Below is my attempt. Remember these tips are for all types of artist, not just fine artist.
Why Create an Artist Blog
Like a research diary, an artist blog consist of a record of the artist's (researcher's) involvement in a project. An artist blog contains information about the artist, what the artist does and the process of doing art. The main reasons for keeping an artist blog are: to document your thinking and the creative process, to provide material for reflection, to provide data on the creative process, and to me the most important part is to record the development of your creative skills.
It is also useful means to explore your practices, to practice and gain confidence in recording the creative process and writing about the process, to be empowered as an artist through sharing experiences with peers and to engage in supportive but critical interaction between peers and patrons
Where to Start.
It is important to write about your art daily but that can be a little difficult when you work full-time or/and have family obligations. So only write something when you think about or work on your art projects. Don't focus on a perfect blog entry, an artist blog is a record of your developing thoughts and actions and reflective practices. It is often useful to make entries under these headings: Reflection on what I have done, Plan to do, Actions Taken, and Observations Made
What to Write About
- Summary of what happens each day you work on your art project.
- Stories of conversations, discussion, planning sessions and so on with peers, sponsors, friends, family about art, your art or about what inspires you to do art.
- Questions and topics for further investigation
- What if, dreams, or guesses
- Drawings, mind maps ( scan and post to blog)
- Reflection on what I saw or/and read
- Plans for future art projects
Keeping a blog has been very helpful in my professional life as an artist. The information I post in my blog I have used in creating a presentation for a lecture I am to give in October. I promise it comes in handy when you have to talk about your artwork.
Enjoy – Peace & Love, Alease
